Petworth House and Petworth Deer Park is a fantastic National Trust to visit, we had a lovely walk around the gardens and parkland and ended up our visit with the Petworth Dee Park which was amazing to see.
We had wanted to visit Petworth House National Trust for a while, so picked a beautiful day where we could easily explore and see it at its best. We weren’t disappointed, it’s a really lovely place to visit, and walk around. But the best part is the amazing herd of Deer in the Petworth Deer Park. I will happily visit Petworth House again, there is so much more we didn’t explore.
Petworth House Gardens
The parking is nicely placed by the main entrance, with the toilets and small shop here too. You’re then taken through into the Petworth House gardens, where you can walk in various different directions, with different views each way.
We headed straight into the more wooded area of the pleasure gardens, which took you to the Rotunda which was constructed in 1766 and gives you a brilliant view across. The kids love this, as it’s perfect for climbing into to take in the view!
There are more formal garden beds throughout the garden that are filled with many beautiful flowers and shrubs. You’re able to walk your dog on a short lead area in this garden, and all is well pathed for nice access.
Petworth House
When you walk through the gardens it takes you out into the parkland, which is where the house looks over. This is a house! It’s very large! At the time we visited, we didn’t want to go inside the house, but you can visit some of the rooms of this amazing house with your National Trust membership or a ticket purchase. See the website for opening times, and what is open as I have seen some of this is shut during the winter times.
Petworth Deer Park
This was an amazing sight to see when we walked through into the parkland. It’s a large open space with multiple ways to walk. We didn’t really know where to go, but you can download a trail map to follow their dedicated paths. We walked down to the large pond, or lake I think as this looked like a lovely place to have a picnic. With benches placed around the edge of the pond, or just popping a picnic rug down.
Be aware of the wildlife though! There were so many ducks and animals, which was so nice to watch. I can imagine many many years ago the owners having little rowboats on this lake, taking in the view of their house.
We started to walk up the hill, but this view certainly stopped me in my tracks as I turned around. It’s a very beautiful place to walk, let alone what we got to see over the next hill!
This was looking down to where we thought the deer might be, with some tiny little dots right at the back I think we had found them!
Yep, we did, and the kids we’re so excited to see them so close. The herd of deer has been living here for over 500 years, so well and truly made this their home.
Petworth House says they have around 700-800 of them living in their 700 acres of parkland, so I think you’re in with a good chance of seeing them here.
