We went to see the sunrise at River Hamble Country Park during the first lockdown 2020, it was a very special thing to do as a family together during this time. Lockdown has been a strange time in our lives and something we’re going to remember for a very long time. Something we can tell the generations after us, and probably something that is going to change our lives forever. The children will be learning about it in years to come, and my kid’s Grandchildren are going to ask them what it was like.
There is a lot of negative things surrounding us, most of all people sadly dying and people being so poorly. As a Mum of three children who are old enough to know what is happening outside of our door, my job has been to protect them as much as I can, both physically and mentally.
I’ve wanted to make our lockdown time as positive and happy as possible. I’ve wanted to do things with them that normally I would say ‘I’m too tired’ or ‘Oh I don’t have time right now’. Making it a time that they say ‘Yes it was tough during lockdown but I got to spend some lovely time with my parents doing things we wouldn’t normally do‘
So Lets Go On A Sunrise Walk At 5am Kids!
Haha, I’m not sure when I said it did they think I was being serious until I told them to set their alarms for 4:30am!!
It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years with them, but as my kids aren’t early risers anymore (I’ve had my fair few years of early mornings with them, hang in there guys it’s gets easier!) we love our lay-ins at the weekend. But thanks to lockdown the lay in’s don’t have to be just at the weekend now.
We did it, left the house at 5:15am!
We’re very lucky that we have the River Hamble Country Park within walking distance. A half-hour walk takes us right down into it and to the river where I knew this is a beautiful place in Southampton to see the sunrise at River Hamble Country Park.
It was so quiet, this is the motorway bridge and normally this would be full constantly with traffic, it’s very strange to see.
I thought we had missed it, but we got there just as it popped over the horizon, it was perfect and very beautiful.
It was worth the early wake-up call, the kids were shocked by how big and red it was when it came over and how they could see it so clearly without being blinded. I was so happy to be able to show them this, and something they will remember that’s positive during the lockdown.
We stayed on the beach for about 30 minutes just taking in the peaceful surroundings and forgetting about all the worries that surround us.
I’ve not taken my camera out with me as much recently, but I really miss it, it felt good to capture moments again. I didn’t take as many photos last year and looking back I really miss not having the photos.

The girls took these ones on our walk back home. Taking photos makes you stop and look more closely. They probably would have walked past these bluebells normally.

Gus enjoyed a lovely country park walk too, although he couldn’t understand why I didn’t fancy throwing his ball into the river for him to swim in at 6am!!!
We walked back home just in time to pop into the local convenience shop, which opens at 7am, to pick up a few bits when it was quiet. Including some bacon for a well-earned brunch!

- The gate doesn’t open for car parking early, look at opening times as it changes through the year
- Can park at The Norman Roadaway car park and walk through
- Sunrise over the river is stunning
- Good for dog walking
- Good car parking and facilities open during the daytime at certain times throughout the year

What a wonderful thing to do Steph – and your kids will probably remember this for years to come. It’s something I’d also like to do, but not sure on where to do it where I live – we have some gorgeous fields near us but knowing my luck the sun will rise on the other side. Still, there’s one way of finding out!

I would absolutely love to be able to walk to the beach! What a stunning walk to take and especially early. Walking with my dogs and taking in the nature is my favourite part of this situation.

I love this idea so much! I have been trying to get my 10,000 steps in a day (harder for me than it sounds). I have been out early some mornings, but not this early. Perhaps I should take a leaf out of your book! The pictures are gorgeous!
